Screening of Charged Singularities of Random Fields

چکیده

Many types of point singularity have a topological index, or ‘charge’, associated with them. For example the phase of a complex field depending on two variables can either increase or decrease on making a clockwise circuit around a simple zero, enabling the zeros to be assigned charges of ±1. In random fields we can define a correlation function for the charge-weighted density of singularities. In many types of random fields, this correlation function satisfies an identity which shows that the singularities ‘screen’ each other perfectly: a positive singularity is surrounded by an excess of concentration of negatives which exactly cancel its charge, and vice-versa. This paper gives a simple and widely applicable derivation of this result. A counterexample where screening is incomplete is also exhibited.

Singularities in speckled speckle: screening.

We study screening of optical singularities in random optical fields with two widely different length scales. We call the speckle patterns generated by such fields speckled speckle, because the major speckle spots in the pattern are themselves highly speckled. We study combinations of fields whose components exhibit short- and long-range correlations and find unusual forms of screening.

Broadening of resonance lines by charged dislocations

It is shown that the random electric fields of charged dislocations in insulators should cause appreciable broadening of sharp resonance lines such as spin-resonance signals. The degree of broadening is very sensitive to the screening of the dislocations by charged point defects. Since the shape of the inhomogeneously broadened resonance line monitors the distribution of the internal fields, th...

The full metric describing a charged, magnetized generalization of the Tomimatsu-Sato (TS) δ = 2 solution is presented in a concise explicit form. We use it to investigate some physical properties of the solution; in particular, we point out the existence of naked ring singularities in the hyperextreme TS metrics, the fact previously overlooked by the researchers, and we also demonstrate that t...

Spherically symmetric black holes in minimally modified self-dual gravity

We discuss spherically symmetric black holes in the modified self-dual theory of gravity recently studied by Krasnov, obtained adding a Weyl-curvature dependent ‘cosmological term’ to the Plebanski lagrangian for general relativity. This type of modified gravity admits two different types of singularities: one is a true singularity for the theory where the fundamental fields of the theory, as w...

Disorder, screening, and quantum Hall oscillations.

The density of states (DOS) of electrons in two-dimensional (2D) quantum wells and the broadening of Landau levels (LL's) is evaluated. The electrons are assumed to interact with screened, charged impurities located at random in the material. The random location of the impurities leads to a disordered environment seen by the electrons. The screening of the impurities by the 2D electron gas is e...
